Living near an airport could be bad for your health

HOUSTON, TX – Flying makes travel convenient, but for those who live near airports it may be a health risk.

Dr. John Higgins of UTHealth and Harris Health System explains, “People who live near the airport had an increase in their cardiovascular disease and vascular events about 20%.”

And that’s just from the noise according to two colleges in London, who studied the mortality rates of nearly 3.6 million people who live near London Heathrow Airport.

“There is this constant takeoff and landing sound and those airplanes put out a lot of decibels, 100-140 decibels.  So if you live near an airport you’re going to be hearing those sounds.”

Other factors could weigh in on the numbers, such as road noise, ethnic composition and air pollution. Studying it further could be worth another listen.
