Mediterranean diet proven to reduce risk of heart disease

BARCELONA, SPAIN – Want to live longer? Then go ‘Greek.’  At least so says a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

‘Greek’ means a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, olive oil, nuts and wine.

The study was conducted in Spain and involved more than 7,000 people between 55 and 80-years-old. All participants had diabetes, or three other issues like: high blood pressure, bad cholesterol, obesity or a family history of heart disease.

Scientist split the volunteers into three groups:

Group A ate a Mediterranean Diet plus 4 cups of Extra Virgin Olive Oil a week.

Group B ate a Mediterranean Diet also but would add one ounce of nuts each day.

Group C ate a Low-Fat diet… no nuts or Olive Oil.

After 5 years the results were so shocking the study was ended, without need for further research.

The conclusion: Eating a Mediterranean Diet cut the risk of heart disease death, heart attacks and strokes by 30%; that’s 5% better than the best drugs available- like statins.

Whether you believe this study or not; it’s all food for thought.
