Paul Simon sings at funeral of Sandy Hook teacher

NEWTOWN, CT – ‘Hello darkness, our old friend, we’ve come to talk with you again, because a bad thing left us weeping for the children who are sleeping.’

Sorrow and grief greet another day in Newtown, CT, as families bury their children and friends say their last goodbyes.

Wednesday was the funeral for first-grade teacher Victoria Soto, described as a hero who died protecting her students.

In attendance was Paul Simon, a family friend. And as he did here at the ten-year anniversary of the 9-11 attacks, he sang ‘The Sound of Silence.’

‘And in the TV lights we see thousands of people, maybe more. People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening. People writing words to stories never told.  It’s getting old, to the people of Newtown.’

Because now you will see among the angels, and stars, and bears, and hearts, other signs, literally, of media fatigue.

In those first hours and days, the media descended on Newtown like the wolf on the fold, providing wall-to-wall coverage to the nation, and, indeed, to the world.

Even though most of the networks and international media have moved on, there are still plenty of satellite trucks and reporters from New York, Boston, and Philadelphia to disturb the sounds of silence in this little town.

And to add insult to grievous injury, the family of Noah Pozner, one of the first-graders who died, learned that some scam artist set up a web page to solicit donations for the family.

The web page is gone, but you can bet others will take its place, because some people will always try to cash in on the suffering of others.
